Diane Tavenner
Founder & CEO

Diane is the Founder and CEO of Summit Public Schools. She founded Summit's flagship school, Summit Preparatory Charter High School, in 2003, quickly earning the reputation as one of the best public high schools in the nation, according to national rankings by Newsweek and US News & World Report. Diane also serves as the Board Chair of the California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) Board of Directors and is a member of the Spring 2013 cohort of the Pahara-Aspen Education Fellowship. Prior to Summit, she spent ten years as a public school teacher, administrator and leader in traditional urban and suburban public schools throughout California. She holds a B.A. in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Southern California, a MA in Administration and Policy Analysis from Stanford University.

Diego Arambula
Team Lead

Diego joined Summit Prep as a social science teacher in 2005 and taught for six years. He left the classroom to help launch Summit's two East San Jose schools, becoming the founding Executive Director of Summit Rainier. Today, Diego leads Summit's growth into new communities. Prior to coming to Summit, Diego served as Communications Director for Congressman Cal Dooley, after serving as Deputy Campaign Manager. He holds a BA in Government, with honors from Harvard University and a MA in Education from Stanford University.

 

Sarah Satinover

Sarah's passion for ensuring that all students have access to a great education was born from a love of theater. While studying for her BA from Harvard, she led and taught an afterschool theater program for students in Boston Public Schools in which arts funding had been cut. Her interest grew from arts education to education more broadly, and after graduation, she joined The Bridgespan Group as a management consultant. At Bridgespan, she advised nonprofits and foundations in addressing their key strategic challenges, where her clients included a teacher residency and school turnaround program, an education provider for underserved youth, a national violence prevention program, and more. She then received a joint MBA and Master's in Education from Stanford University. Excited to help open new schools serving students who need them the most, she joined the Growth Team at Summit.

 

Linda Stevenin

Linda brings huge passion and over 30 years' experience to her Facilities Development work with Summit Public Schools' Growth Team. She is a licensed architect in the state of California, and previously worked with educators and local parents to open a charter high school, where she served on the Board of Directors and Interim Executive Director. Linda received a B.A. in Education/Organizational Studies from Pitzer College and a MA.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction at Notre Dame de Namur University.

Mira Browne
Team Lead

Mira joined Summit in 2012 to lead the organization's development, communications and external relations efforts. Prior to Summit, Mira served as a Senior Account Executive with Larson Communications, a public relations firm specializing in education reform and worked in the administration of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg as the Deputy Director of Public Affairs for the New York City Department for the Aging. Mira began her communications career working at the Arab American Institute in Washington D.C. and holds a BA in Journalism from George Washington University.

 

Laura Finefrock

Laura grew up attending public school in the Bay Area and graduated from Woodside High School. While pursuing her BA in History at UCLA, Laura interned for a charter school in Los Angeles. After graduating, she remained in education, taking a full-time position at the UCLA School of Law. She went on to obtain a master's degree in business administration from Columbia Business School, and worked in finance for three years at Barclays and Jefferies, before deciding to pursue her passion by returning to the education sector. In addition to being a part of the team at Summit, Laura is a Broad Resident, Class of 2013-15. 

 

Roger Zamora

Roger is proud to be working for Summit in the very community he grew up in, helping students meet their fullest potential and strive for a higher education. Roger served as Summit Prep's Director of Operations for four years before joining the organization's Development and Communications team in 2012. Prior to Summit, Roger worked for various education non-profits across the Bay Area and studied Politics at Saint Mary's College of California.

Adam Carter
Team Lead

Adam joined Summit Prep in 2003 as its founding English teacher. After two years, he spent the next six years living and working in Indonesia and Argentina, where he taught a variety of courses, including AP and IB, served on school-wide governance committees, and served as head of several departments. Adam also founded and directed the Innovative Schools Program through Yayasan Emmanuel, an NGO working in the greater Jakarta area that serves thousands of West Javan students and hundreds of teachers, and continues to grow. Adam returned to Summit in 2011 to lead the organization's Academic and Professional Development teams. Prior to Summit, Adam was a high school English teacher in Mountain View, where he won the California Association for Advancement in Education's Outstanding New Teacher Award.

 

Kieran McMillen

Kieran grew up in suburban Maryland and studied Public Policy and Economics at Duke University.  Within two years of graduating from college, he accepted a job teaching math at his former high school, Georgetown Prep, in North Bethesda, MD.  After teaching there for four years, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in the summer of 2007 to pursue his Master's degree at the Stanford Teacher Education Program, where he completed his student teaching at Summit Prep.  The following year, Kieran became a full-time math teacher and the head basketball coach at Summit Prep, where he stayed through the 2011-12 school year.  Since then, he has served as the Math Specialist for the organization and is currently the Director of Professional Development for Summit Public Schools.  Even though he lives in the Bay Area, Kieran remains a die-hard fan of all Washington D.C.-area sports teams.

 

Jesse Roe

Jesse's formal education included attending public schools in northwestern New Jersey and obtaining an undergraduate degree in mathematics at Boston University.  Those experiences, as well as summer jobs as a camp counselor and tutor, prompted Jesse to enter the education field through a Math for America Fellowship immediately after finishing his bachelor's degree.  This fellowship led to a Master's degree at Columbia's Teachers College and five years of teaching high school mathematics in New York City.  In the summer of 2011, Jesse moved to the bay area and started a teaching as the founding math teacher at Summit Tahoma in San Jose.  In his seven years of teaching, Jesse developed a passion for mentoring high school students; this passion motivated Jesse to take a job on the SPS Academics Team as the non-cognitive skills specialist.

 

Kyle Moyer

Kyle knew he wanted to be a teacher after stepping into his first classroom teaching English to university students in Indonesia. Supporting students in mathematics and teaching biology at Summit Prep hooked him for life. He then received an MA from the Stanford Teacher Education Program, but before returning to Summit Public Schools, taught math in Ecuador for two years. He was a founding math teacher at Everest Public High School and after his mentees graduated 4 years later, took on the role of Cognitive Skills Specialist. Kyle is also a Math for America Master Teacher Fellow at UC Berkeley and a National Board Certified Teacher.

 

Andy Lichtblau

Andy grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota and graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 2004 with BA in Education. Andy began his teaching career as a Special Education teacher at a large public middle school in Los Angeles. He joined Summit Prep in the fall of 2006. Andy's passion for advocacy and progressive innovation for special education students led him to pursue National Board Certification as an Exceptional Needs Specialist, which he obtained in 2010. Currently Andy is the Director of Special Education for all the Summit Public Schools.

 

Renee Moyer

Though her teaching career began abroad, Renée knew she would eventually return to California to work in public schools. Before teaching, she graduated from Northwestern University with majors in journalism and political science. Later, she earned her master's in education from the University of Alabama, and joined Summit Prep's special education department in 2009. Since then, she has earned her MA in Special Education from University of San Francisco, and is excited about her current role in supporting special education teachers across the organization.

 

Lily Lam

Lily is originally from Hong Kong and went to school there, in Sacramento, and the Bay Area. Lily received her undergraduate degree in English from UC Berkeley and an M.A. in education from Stanford University. She taught English in Sacramento at a comprehensive public high school before moving to Summit Prep in 2008. After four years as a Summit teacher, Lily became a literacy specialist on the Academics team. She is now a coach for new teachers in the BTSA (Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment) program. In her free time, Lily loves to photograph dogs and babies

 

Joanna Hefty

As a member of Summit's Academics Team, Joanna is responsible for ensuring teachers have the necessary training and ongoing program support to lead their students to success through curriculum and literacy development.  She worked as a clinician for Lindamood-Bell before teaching seventh and eighth grade Special Education and Social Studies in Harlem. After Joanna earned an MST in special and general education from Pace University she returned to her home state of California to join KIPP as a teacher and chair of the Social Studies department.  She graduated with honors from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts where she majored in Theater and was a founding member of the Grassroots Performance Project.

 

Danielle Johnson

As a first generation college graduate herself, Danielle has always had a passion for education and college readiness. After graduating from St. Mary's College of Maryland with a BA in sociology and anthropology, Danielle moved to the Bay Area and pursued her teaching credential and MA in education at Mills College. She spent 11 years teaching history in San Francisco at a traditional public school as well as the Envision Charter network, with a year hiatus to teach English in China. Danielle left the classroom in 2011 to lead professional development for educators throughout California before deciding to return to a more school-based context at Summit Public Schools as Director of College Readiness.

Jon Deane
Team Lead

In Jon's eight years with the Summit, he has served in a variety of roles, including a math teacher and Chief Financial Officer for Summit Prep, as well as the founding Executive Director of Everest Public High School, Summit's second school. Jon is deeply committed to developing Summit Public Schools' next-generation model schools for all students, and to creating information systems that allow all of our stakeholders to better access information about our students and our schools. Jon received his BA in Economics from Stanford University, and also received a Master's in Education from the Stanford Teacher Education Program. Prior to joining Summit Public Schools, Jon spent seven years as a CPA in the private sector.

 

Sam Strasser

Sam came to education from technology, and has always focused on how software tools can improve the workflows of its users. He first worked as a developer at Microsoft on the Office Communicator team, and then at several San Francisco Bay Area educational technology startups, including Clever, Desmos and BloomBoard. Before Summit, he co-founded and was Head of Engineering at Junyo.

 

Howard Shen

Howard started with Summit in 2005 as a student teacher, and the spirit of collaboration and innovation persuaded him to accept an offer to teach science at Summit after graduating with an MA in Education from the Stanford Teacher Education Program.  A Knowles Teaching Fellow from 2005-2010, Howard taught Biology and Chemistry at Summit Prep for six years, during which time he also coached three mentor groups through the college application process. Howard then moved into his current position on the Information Team at Summit Public Schools.   In addition to the MA, Howard holds a BS in Chemistry with a minor in Computer Science from Stanford University.

 

Bruce Brege

Bruce's original 20 year career in business included a series of financial positions at companies such as Marsh & McLennan and Genentech. After attaining an engineering degree, he managed and analyzed data at an internet startup. Bruce was the founding math teacher at both Summit Prep and Everest and holds a BBA in Finance from Ohio University, an MBA in Finance and Marketing from the University of Chicago, an MS in Engineering-Economic Systems and Operations Research and a MA in Secondary Education from Stanford University.

 

Zoe Downing

Zoe is a recent college graduate and enjoys working at her alma mater, Summit Prep Charter High School, Class of 2009. She has a B.A. in Government from Mills College.

Drew Grimshaw
Team Lead

Drew has been with Summit for nine years and is the longest-serving teacher in the organization. He transitioned into his current role in 2012 and is passionate about improving the development and training of all Summit's employees.
 

Jessica Miranda

Jessica was born and raised in San Jose, CA. She has always been interested in working in education and has worked in both traditional public and charter schools for about 10 years. Jessica attends San Jose State University and is working towards obtaining her BA in Psychology. Jessica was the founding Office Manager at Summit Public Schools Rainier and Tahoma in 2011 and currently serves the Manager of People.

Isabelle Parker
Team Lead

Isabelle joined Summit Prep in 2006 as its Chief Financial Officer and subsequently served on the founding team for the CMO, Everest Public High School and Summit Public Schools' Rainier and Tahoma. She brings public and private sector business and management experience combined with school operations knowledge to her position. Prior to Summit, Isabelle worked for EdTec, a back office service provider to California charter schools and the Riekes Center for Human Enhancement, a youth mentoring organization. She is a coach for Woodside Vaulters, a female youth equestrian / gymnastics team and serves as the Education Chair of the US Equestrian Federation Vaulting High Performance Committee. Isabelle holds an MBA from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and a BA in Economics and Psychology from Claremont McKenna College.

Alice Doliner

Alice was born and grew up in Odessa, Ukraine. She graduated from Moscow University with a B.S. in Accounting and earned a Master Degree in Finance before coming to the United States in 1993. Alice joined Summit Public Schools in 2011 because she loves working with youth and the organization's atmosphere. Prior to joining Summit, Alice was an Accounting Supervisor at the Treasure Island Job Corps Center in San Francisco.

 

Elizabeth Padilla

A product of the Bay Area public school system, Elizabeth went on to continue her education at UC Berkeley where she discovered her passion for helping underserved youth. As an education minor, she mentored students in the East Bay through organizations such as the YWCA and Spread the Word. She began her career in finance and accounting, auditing nonprofits and foundations for a regional firm. Two and a half years later, Elizabeth decided to pursue her true passions and joined Education Pioneers as an analyst fellow. She is now excited to be working in the education field as a part of the finance team at Summit Public Schools.

Bryant Wong
Team Lead

Bryant joined Summit Prep in 2007 as the Director of Technology. He is deeply invested in building technology that is both cutting edge and closely aligned with both the needs of students and schools. Previously, he worked in management and support capacity at High Tech High, All Covered, Unlimited Fiber Optics, Sigma Networks, and Tomen Telecom. He holds a BS in Computer Information Systems from Golden Gate University and an MBA from the University of San Francisco.

AJ Schuck

AJ grew up in a small town in Sedona, Arizona.  After completing high school he attended college at University of Arizona in Tucson. During his four years he enjoyed playing in many competitive sports including basketball, soccer, volleyball, and paintball. However his passion for technology and all things nerdy lead him towards a career in IT and Computer Science.  After completing a double major in both MIS and Operations Management he was eager to start his career in Technology and quickly started a new job working for the University in IT.  He stayed in Tucson for 3 more years until he made the jump to move to the Bay area and work for Summit as a Network Administrator on the technology team.

Jen Davis Wickens
Team Lead

Jen works in public education because she believes that all students have the potential to graduate from college, regardless of their backgrounds. She knows firsthand that excellent schools transform the trajectory of students' lives. Jen's experience as a teacher and leader in education is vast. Jen has consulted for charter schools throughout the country and for local districts, including Seattle Public Schools where she led principal professional development. She also served as Vice President of Teaching and Learning for Envision Schools where she coached principals and trained teachers. She was the Founding Principal of Impact Academy, an Envision charter high school in Hayward, CA that serves students who will be the first in their family to attend college. Prior to this, Jen was a teacher in Seattle Public Schools and Highline. She has a Master's degree in education from Seattle University and completed her administrative training through New Leaders for New Schools, a national, urban principal training program. Jen has a Bachelor of Arts from Willamette University. When she isn't building communities or coaching educators to be their absolute best, Jen loves to spend time in Seattle with her husband and two daughters. Jen hopes her two daughters will attend a Summit high school someday.
